GIS AND SURVEY TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP

BUSINESS CONCEPTS AND NEW SOFTWARE METHODS

NCWC GIS Users Groupä

Survey GIS Workshop and Demonstration

March 23-24, 2004

(Tuesday-Wednesday)

Napa Community College

Napa Campus / GIS Laboratory

2277 Napa-Vallejo Highway

Napa, CA

Building 700, Room 722

The Napa Community College Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department, in conjunction with the Northern California Wine Country GIS Users Groupä, REBRAC, PVTS and ESRI, is sponsoring a workshop and product demonstration. The emphasis will be on selected GIS software methods relating to Survey and Engineering technology.

The workshop will focus on ESRI GIS software products and extensions as they support Survey and Civil Engineering applications. The relationships between software environments at the levels of data, feature primitives and actual maps will be discussed.

Paired computer laboratory sessions in both ArcView 8.3 and Survey Analyst will introduce workshop attendees to integrated GIS methods for Surveying and Engineering.

A series of four distinguished speakers will discuss the current state of GIS technology and methods as they relate to the Survey and Engineering professions. Hands-on demonstrations importing survey field data into ArcGIS Survey Analyst will be held in afternoon sessions. Various exhibitors will be available to demonstrate relevant new hardware and software products. Lunch will be provided both days. There will also be a wine and cheese networking session on Wednesday afternoon.

Currently, the survey and engineering industry are heavily invested in CADD software and methods, primarily for design. Linking relational data or other information to maps and plans is the new frontier. As that integration of GIS methods with survey and engineering practice evolves, users will need different tools that can seamlessly port data back and forth quickly. Those users will rely on multiple software tools for specialized tasks and data management. 2D and 3D surface models linked to real time data will provide support in the areas of design, construction, operations and management. This is an opportunity to evaluate the latest technical software beyond the capabilities of conventional CADD.

The tuition will be 90.00 per person per day. Lunch will be provided both days. Please consult the Schedule of topics and presenters on the following pages. Please register with Brooke Hunt or Reg Parks at PVTS -- (707) 257-8041. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. The workshop will be limited to 24 seats.
